About Chromatic Tuner

The 'Chromatic Tuner' is a completely free, browser-based online tuning tool that leverages the built-in microphone of your computer or smartphone to capture sounds from musical instruments in real time and instantly determine which note name (C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B) the detected pitch is closest to.

The deviation between the detected pitch and the ideal pitch is precisely quantified in 'cents' ranging from -50 to +50, and visually displayed through an intuitive color-coded gauge on screen. When the gauge sits in the central green zone (within ±5 cents), it indicates the tuning is accurate; the yellow zone (±5–15 cents) signals fine adjustment is needed; and the red zone (15+ cents) indicates a significant pitch deviation. By combining the advanced audio analysis capabilities of the Web Audio API with an autocorrelation pitch detection algorithm, this tool achieves high-precision pitch detection rivaling dedicated hardware tuners.

This tuner includes standard tuning presets for 6 instruments: guitar (6 strings), ukulele (4 strings), bass guitar (4 strings), mandolin (4 strings), violin (4 strings), and cello (4 strings). Each string's target frequency is displayed clearly, allowing you to efficiently tune each instrument while referencing the correct pitches.

An additional feature is the A4 calibration control, allowing you to adjust the reference frequency for tuning. Beyond the default A4 = 440 Hz, you can switch to 442 Hz (orchestra pitch) or 432 Hz (alternative tuning), accommodating different pitch standards used by various countries and orchestras.

With absolutely no app installation or account registration required, the greatest appeal is its immediate accessibility—simply open your browser and start tuning right away.

How to use Chromatic Tuner

  1. Open the page and click the 'Start Microphone' button, then approve the microphone access permission from your browser. A permission dialog will appear only on the first use.
  2. Pluck the strings of the instrument you want to tune one at a time, letting the microphone pick up the sound. The detected note name (e.g., A4) will be displayed prominently in the center of the screen, along with the detected frequency in Hz.
  3. While watching the cent gauge, adjust the pitch by turning the tuning pegs. When the gauge settles in the central green zone (within ±5 cents), tuning is complete. Yellow indicates fine adjustment needed; red indicates significant deviation.
  4. Press the preset buttons for Guitar, Ukulele, Bass, Mandolin, Violin, or Cello to display each instrument's target pitches and frequencies. Reference these while tuning each string efficiently.
  5. If you need to tune to a different A4 reference frequency (e.g., 442 Hz for orchestra pitch or 432 Hz for alternative tuning), adjust the A4 Reference field. Use the Reset button to return to the default 440 Hz.
  6. When tuning is complete, press the 'Stop Microphone' button to release the microphone.

Benefits of Chromatic Tuner

  • No dedicated tuner needed—tune with just your browser. Traditional guitar and ukulele tuning required expensive electronic or clip-on tuners, but with this tool, tuning is done completely in your browser on PC or smartphone. Whether you can't find your tuner before practice or need to tune on the go, simply open the page to access professional-grade precise tuning instantly.
  • High-precision pitch detection using autocorrelation. This tool employs autocorrelation algorithms combined with parabolic interpolation in the time domain, not simple FFT analysis. This ensures accurate fundamental frequency detection even with overtone-rich guitar and piano sounds, reliably capturing pitch deviations down to the cent level.
  • Supports 6 instruments and A4 calibration. Includes standard tuning presets for guitar, ukulele, bass, mandolin, violin, and cello. The A4 reference frequency adjustment (440 Hz / 442 Hz / 432 Hz, etc.) accommodates different pitch standards and diverse tuning needs.
