Overview of Social Insurance Premiums

Social insurance premiums (shakai hokenryo) are mandatory payroll deductions for employees in Japan. They fund four essential insurance schemes:

- Health Insurance (kenko hoken) - covers medical expenses - Nursing Insurance (kaigo hoken) - applies to those aged 40+ - Employee Pension Insurance (kosei nenkin) - provides retirement benefits - Employment Insurance (koyo hoken) - covers unemployment benefits

Calculation and Rates

Premiums are calculated by applying specific rates to the standard monthly remuneration (hyojun hoshu getsugaku). Health, nursing, and pension premiums are split equally (50/50) between employee and employer. Employment insurance, however, has a slightly higher employer share. This tool uses 2025 Kyokai Kenpo (All Japan Health Insurance Association) national average rates.

Monthly Remuneration Caps

Standard monthly remuneration has maximum limits. For employees earning above these caps, premiums are calculated using the capped amount rather than the full salary. The pension insurance cap is 650,000 yen, and the health insurance cap is 1,390,000 yen.
